Sukanya Samriddhi calculator — for a daughter
The highest guaranteed rate among small-savings schemes: 8.2%, tax-free, for a girl child under 10. You deposit for 15 years; the account matures 21 years after opening.
Deposits run for 15 years from opening; the account then grows untouched until year 21.
The rules this calculator applies
- Who: a girl child below 10 at opening; one account per girl, up to two per family (more for twins/triplets). Opened by a parent or guardian at a post office or bank.
- Deposits: ₹250 minimum to ₹1,50,000 maximum per financial year, for 15 years from opening; the account continues earning until 21 years from opening (or the girl's marriage after 18).
- Rate: 8.2% per annum, compounded yearly — reviewed quarterly by the Finance Ministry; unchanged through the July–September 2026 quarter.
- Tax — EEE: deposits deductible under 80C (old regime), interest and maturity tax-free in either regime.
- Withdrawal: up to 50% of the balance after the girl turns 18 (or passes class 10), for education; premature closure allowed for marriage after 18.
Worked example
₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years at 8.2%: you deposit ₹22,50,000; by year 21 the account holds about ₹71,82,000 — roughly ₹49,32,000 of tax-free interest, and two-thirds of it earned in the six years after deposits stop. Even ₹5,000 a month (₹60,000 a year) grows to about ₹28,73,000.
Edge cases to know
- Rate resets quarterly — the projection assumes 8.2% for 21 years; SSY has ranged 7.6%–9.2% since launch.
- Deposit by the 5th of the month to earn that month's interest; a lump sum each April is the best case the calculator models.
- Missed year: the account becomes "defaulted" — revive with the minimum ₹250 plus ₹50 per defaulted year.
- Operation passes to the girl at 18; until then the guardian operates it.
